Website hosting for a small business: what to check

The right hosting plan should make it easy to run your website today and clear what happens when the project grows.

Start with the website you need to run

List the number of websites, current storage, databases, email accounts and the control panel you expect to use. Include media uploads and a sensible margin for growth rather than choosing only from the size of today’s homepage.

Separate hosting from the domain

A domain name is the address people use to find your website. Hosting is the server space and service that runs it. You can often keep a domain you already own, so check the nameserver and transfer steps before changing anything.

Check support and responsibility

Shared hosting keeps server administration simpler for a business website. A VPS gives you root access and more control, but updates, access controls, monitoring and recovery become part of your responsibility. Choose the level of work your team can support.

Review the total before you order

Compare the billing period, applicable taxes, domain charges, options and any migration work. The final order summary should show the total before payment, and the selected plan should leave room for the way your website will grow.
