When do you need root access on a VPS?

Root access is useful when you need to install and configure software yourself. It also means you own more of the server maintenance work.

Root access gives you control

You can configure the operating system, install packages, run services and tune the environment for your application. This is useful for custom stacks and development projects.

Control comes with responsibility

Plan updates, firewall and access controls, monitoring, backups and recovery. Test changes before applying them to a live service.

Check the workload first

Estimate CPU, RAM, storage and traffic needs, then check whether your application supports the operating system and architecture you plan to use.

Ask about managed help

If you need someone to manage the operating system or application, confirm the support scope before ordering. Root access itself does not make a VPS managed.
